The ping-pong protest “Earth’s Rally” was a public performance piece designed to visually demonstrate the causes of climate change. The information was sourced from earth.org and then artistically re-distributed on ping-pong bats and balls. During the rally, hand-painted ping-pong balls were struck by bats labelled with “Fossil Fuels”, “Plastic”, “Humans” and “Food Waste”. Each player was assigned a specific cause, and the game began with these “Earth” balls being forcefully hit towards the opposing team, as if the blame of each cause was being passed to the other.

The match was constantly interrupted by a displays of competitive spirit from both players and onlookers. When given the opportunity to smash their balls and bats at the end of the match the players showed zero hesitation, symbolising the destructive impact of these forces on our planet. Spontaneous side-games took place, where “Earth” balls were directed at players, representing Earth retaliating against harm inflicted upon it.

The event’s interactive nature, paired with its visual symbolism, powerfully represented the ongoing conflict between human activities and the planet’s health. By staging “Earth’s Rally” in a public space, I aimed to attract the attention and stimulate reflection among onlookers.
