WHAT GOES WHERE?
2023 - COMMUNICATION DESIGN
SUPERVISED BY: JANET MILLSI have created a visually appealing, simplistic and interactive design aimed to educate early primary school students on how to recycle effectively. This has been achieved through a “wheel of knowledge” design outcome, that when spun, reveals a specific recyclable waste item and the designated bin that it belongs in. The tactile nature of the spinning wheel makes the design interactive and enjoyable for the target audience. The association between the object and colour that is revealed, will inevitably create a visual connection through repeated use. Ingraining in the younger generation, the basic but important fundamentals of recycling, thus aiding in a more sustainable future.
To keep the design as simple and effective as possible I have used the colours green, yellow and purple, which are the three recycling bins that the State Environment Minister has announced will be implemented across all of Victoria by 2030. Using these three colours in conjunction has also made the design visually appealing, ensuring the wheel entices the target audience and will be favoured in multiple contexts (home, school, workplace). On the back of the wheel I have provided some recycling tips in a fun and engaging way, using cohesive icons and speech bubbles to further students knowledge and reinforce their understanding of recycling. There is also an option to keep your personal recycling wheel in a storage slip, designed to double as a poster.
